i know that valentines is supposed to be a day to show love or whatever...
but all it has ever done is made me angry.
i mean, i loved it when i got to make little valentines for everyone in my class and make a box for people to put treats for me in (ask me sometime about my valentine box in 5th grade...that thing was legit.) but ever since i've been of dating age, valentines has just seemed to let me down.
let us reflect on the last few years...
valentines 2007: got my first kiss from a boy who i wasn't attracted to. at all. also, he was about a foot shorter than me. this kiss happened in the casket room in the mortuary... and was accompanied by a gross box of chocolates topped by a kinky spinner with instructions on how to eat them with your partner... awkward? very.
valentines 2008: my boyfriend of 9 months [josh] decided he wanted to ignore valentines day, and me, all day long. late at night, i found flowers on my doorstep and, thinking they were from him, i may or may not have thanked him. turns out they were from my pity date (aka a person the school pays to take you to prom because you didn't get a date. can you say loser any louder?) asking me to prom. cooooool.
valentines 2009: my boyfriend [taylor] dumped me just a couple weeks before, but then decided he wanted to take me to breakfast on valentines day. i got pretty excited, thinking we'd get back together, but he took me to burger king and made me pay for my own meal. just friends. yay. eff my life.
valentines 2010: it was a sunday. i was sick out of my mind. my on & off boyfriend [colten] decided that valentines was a good time to be off. however, he did get me a very unattractive ginormous frog... just what i wanted! i spent the day in bed with a migraine and zero friends (and that freaking frog) while my roommates went off on romantic adventures. embarrassingly, one of my better valentines days.
valentines 2011: this valentines day was going to be different. we were having an "i hate valentines day party" at hannah's apartment... until everyone (except me) decided it would be cool to get boyfriends the week before and cancel our party. so, last minute, my ex-boyfriend (the aforementioned josh) asked if he could make up the sucky 2008 valentines day to me by taking me out this year. note to self: don't give second chances. i mean, he tried... but i felt as if it was a fail. problem is, he didn't get the "you're failing" vibe, and kept trying. he took me on a walk up the canyon, danced with me in the middle of a parking lot overlooking all of provo, gave me chocolate, and offered to take me wherever i wanted to go... could have been a dream date if i wasn't so not into him. to top it all off, he kept trying to kiss me and couldn't take a hint that i didn't want to. (i might give second chances, but i'm not gonna make the same mistake twice.) i got tired at about midnight and tried to send him home, but his car was dead and i got to stand out with him and his touchy-ness in the freezing cold while we waited for someone to come jump his car. bad.
and this, my friends, is why i usually try to ignore valentines day all together.
[key word: try]
all it does is either depress you because you're single or depress you because your boyfriend didn't live up to your expectations.
not trying to be a pessimist but... really? not the most clever idea for a holiday. sure, it's a day to tell everyone how much you love and appreciate them but... shouldn't we be doing that every day? just sayin'.
so uh...
happy late valentine's day! ♥
hope you all had better luck than i have the past five years! (:
