state drill weekend & m: number 1 fans

sooo... this last weekend was state drill. i debated not going because i don't want to be perceived as a super senior and all those names that high schoolers call those of us who have graduated but still attend the occasional rhs event. i came to the conclusion that people can call me whatever they want. i haven't missed supporting the drill team in the last 4 years and i wasn't gonna stop now, especially since the competition was held at uvu.

the weekend started with my best friend michael k. chamberlain coming to stay with me on friday night before the competition on saturday. when i lived at home, we would talk every day and he was always the person i could turn to when i was having a rough time. i have missed that so much! it was the best feeling in the world to be able to talk with him again, just like old times. he helped (or at least tried to help) me with my accounting homework, then we got cocoa frozen yogurt from red mango and just sat and talked about anything and everything: school, old friends, and life in general. i was sad when he had to go back to his sister's house in springville, but i knew i would see him the next day at the competition.

on saturday i spent all day at the mckay events center watching drill teams compete (with a small break for an olive garden run with michael). the azurettes did so good! they took 7th out of 17 teams, which is pretty good for their first year as a 3A team, but i personally thought they should have done better. it was still amazing though and i'm glad i went to watch! it was funny to see alex, karol, and carly watch the drill competition because it's their first year not being on the team in a while. i think they were more nervous than the girls on the team! all in all, it was an excellent day. i got to see my favorite people (alex. karol. michael) and do something that i love (watch people DANCE!)

this reminded me of what of my favorite parts of high school: being the azurettes #1 fan. ever since i was a little freshman, i've been cheering on the drill team at every possible competition. my junior year, jerika brown and i even made #1 t-shirts with all the names of the girls on the team :) we had some great times cheering on the amazing drill girls and developed some amazing friendships with girls on the team.

i'll never forget my senior year when i got asked if i was "azure" by a girl on the south sevier drill team (toni hunt). after answering that i wasn't but all my best friends were and i was their main supporter she proceeded to yell at me for being too involved in the drill team, the fact that all of richfield high school calls her "chin" (which really isn't my fault, is it?), and a whole assortment of other ridiculous things. i think it was supposed to upset me or something, but i just laughed. there was so much drama between richfield and south sevier's teams, it was almost funny. after one of my best friends made the south sevier drill team, she pretty much stopped talking to me. the rivalry is strong, my friends. it can tear even the closest people apat. and the funny thing is that everyone from richfield or south sevier will have that rivalry in them their whole lives, long after high school is over. i know people in their later years in life who will still do anything to bash on south sevier. oh, the joy of small towns!
